About Plunzoboardtll
The Equipment Desk
Independent information for recreational skippers and practical crew who want an understandable, maintainable boat—not a longer shopping list.
Start with what the crew needs to do
Our guides explain how equipment supports navigation, weather awareness, emergency readiness and everyday life aboard. We begin with the task, then consider suitability, limitations, upkeep, redundancy and storage.
A feature has value only if it solves a useful problem on the intended boat. A simpler item that is accessible and understood can be more useful than a sophisticated one the crew cannot operate or maintain.
We do not sell equipment through this site. The published guides contain no affiliate links, paid product rankings or claims of hands-on product testing.

Editorial approach
Explain the trade-off, not just the feature.
Extra electronics add information and power demand. A protective bag may also delay access. A second device may share the first device’s failure points. These are practical considerations, not reasons to avoid useful equipment.
What these guides can—and cannot—do
The content is a starting point for an equipment review. It is not a remote vessel inspection, engineering design, legal compliance assessment or substitute for seamanship training. Conditions, regulations and product instructions can change.
We refer to recognised organisations and standards where they help explain a role or limitation. Mentioning the RNLI, RYA, NOAA, the Met Office, ISO or another organisation does not imply endorsement or affiliation. Always consult current primary material for an operational decision.
How to use the desk
- Describe the intended passage and the people aboard.
- Check existing equipment, service records and required items.
- Identify a specific gap rather than shopping by category alone.
- Consider installation, training, storage and ongoing care before purchasing.
- Rehearse the resulting arrangement in suitable controlled conditions.
Corrections and enquiries
If a passage is unclear or a reference needs attention, identify the page and explain the concern. Include a current manufacturer or authority source where possible. We do not promise individual technical advice or a response time.
